Koutetsujou no Kabaneri – 04

tfw she saw my huge dick

Second verse of ED single this week, so new lyrics as you’ll notice. Will update to official lyrics next week hopefully. More delays too, I promise!

We need more steam-smiths to work on the DDY Hype-train. We’re in need of KFXers, Translators, and Translation Checkers as well as skilled editors, timers and typesetters. If any of these positions appeal to you, head over to our recruitment page to get started.

Thanks for the quick speedsubs guys <3

  • so when will be rejoined with hi-tech girls?

So just a question, in the ending lyrics… Why is the English part of the song and the “translation” different?

Specifically “Don’t be above your daydream” was ‘translated’ to “Don’t rise above your daydream”.

It’s not too important, just curious as to why it’s done this way.

    • When we translate lyrics, we generally try to at least try to have the whole thing make as much sense as possible. Removing engrish is part of that process. “Don’t be above your daydream” sounds a bit awkward, so it was changed.

  • moozooh

Thanks for the release. Too bad there’s a whole lot of stupid and/or inconsistent shit going on in this episode. It would take half a page to list all of them, but the cake is taken by Kurusu literally running around after receiving what would be considered a fatal wound by any writer with a modicum of self-respect. I really don’t like where this is going. :(

    • When the dude went for his Katana, he showed up from the shadows like he was some kind of ninja samurai Batman. This is a show you watch for dumb action, and nothing else
I mean, the scriptwriter for this wrote VVV before.
If you’re expecting a good story, this is the wrong show

      • I was kinda expecting something on the level of SnK or Snowpiercer (both arguably clever as far as action goes), considering how Kabaneri is essentially a mishmash of the two, but it’s like the writer stopped even trying after the first 3.5 episodes or so. There’s entertaining dumb action, and then there’s action that’s dumb—and the tendency here is towards the latter. Well, I guess expectation management is in order on my end either way.

    What’s dat?

  • demiloon

Feels like there’s a panDEMIc sweeping through some of the more highly respected fansub groups recently, We’ve had Ajin ruined with the ridiculous use of “Demi-Human” and now we’ve come to the insipid use of “Demicorpse”.

I’ll happily keep watching and enjoying Flying Witch and Re Zero but I’m sorry, as far as this series is concerned, I’m done with it.

    Thanks but no thanks.

    • You know, I’m not going to say anything about “Demicorpse” cos hey, some people might not like the approach we took, and that’s okay.

But uh, you do realise “Ajin: Demi-Human” is literally the title of the show, right? That wasn’t a fansub thing.

    • 122aliens

Demicorpse makes sense for kabaneri since according to the people who made the show kabaneri is simply corpse(kabane)+person(ri). Demicorpse means part corpse which is what a creature that is both corpse and person is.

Alternatives are corpse person, corpsemen, man corpse, which aren’t really better than demi-corpse.

  • demiloon

Re: Ajin, I’m not referring to the title. I’m talking about the fact that the name Ajin was subbed through-out the series as Demi-Human.

    Does Ajin translate as Demi-human?

    I think not.

Does 亜人 translate as Ajin Demi-Human, again I think not.

I have the greatest respect for Underwater but the use of Demi-Human instead of the original Ajin through-out the series killed it for me. Unfortunately the best script translation (Ganbarou) appears to have been dropped after 6 episodes.

I also have the greatest respect for you guys, but again you’ve made decisions on this series that have made it un-enjoyable to watch in my opinion.

  • demiloon

Is there an actual translation for Ajin?

    Why should there be?

Fictional creations do not need literal translations, just look through the history of Sci-fi and horror writing in particular,

    • Period

I literally just linked the translation. http://jisho.org/search/亜人

      • demiloon

As it states in the link:

        1. subhuman; demi-human “Only applies to あじん”.

In other words, only applies to Ajin as in the manga or the anime.

        From Animenewsnetwork –

North American publisher Vertical announced at its Katsucon panel on Saturday that it has licensed Gamon Sakurai’s Ajin manga.

Sakurai launched Ajin in Kodansha’s good! Afternoon magazine in 2012, and Kodansha has published three compiled volumes in Japan so far. The tentative English title for Vertical’s edition is Demi-Human.

        Also according to Wikipedia –

On March 15, 2014, Crunchyroll began to release the series on their manga service under the title Ajin: Demi-Human.

So the original name was purely Ajin, any alteration to that has been effected by Western distributors.

It doesn’t really matter one way or the other anymore, what’s done is done and let’s face it, this had nothing to do with DameDesuYo.

My problem has been with the level of translation for Koutetsujou no Kabaneri which in my honest opinion is way overboard and has spoiled any enjoyment in watching it.

With that I bid this series goodbye, adieu, sayonara and hwyl fawr.

        • This guy has some good memes

Aren’t you being a tad bit over dramatic? It’s one word. It takes less than 2% of your brain power to mentally substitute demi-corpse back to kabaneri. Hell, you can change the subs yourself if you so please.

Why the fuck are you translating “Mumei” as “No-Name”?

    • Tekeli-lY

Because it can be translated…? And it sounded like a code-name from when she first met the mc so… :/

    • Period

      Because Mumei isn’t a name.

      • Statix

        Mumei is not a name?

Even someone using it as a name, it still not a name?

It is not a name but somehow it is what everyone called the character with, but it still not a name?

If I use “Anony, Anonymous, Noname, Nameless, Mumei” as my name it still not count as a name?

“Statix” is something randomly typed that up it don’t have any meaning but I using it as one of my names, but it still not count as a name?

Even everyone called me that it still not a name?

        • Period

          >“Statix” is something randomly typed that up it don’t have any meaning but I using it as one of my names, but it still not count as a name?

Whether it is or not doesn’t matter, it doesn’t literally mean “No Name/Nameless”.

It’s used as a “name” because they have nothing to call her, because she doesn’t have a name lol. In other words, it’s basically more of a nickname or a title. Nicknames and titles have meanings, and that’s why they are generally translated.

If and when she is named, what do you suppose we would’ve done then? Going from Mumei > Something Else wouldn’t have made sense to an English audience.

          • Statix

            > it doesn’t literally mean “No Name/Nameless”.

            ???????

            http://jisho.org/search/無名

            Then what does it mean?
Why translating “Mumei” to “No-Name” then?

            > It’s used as a “name” because they have nothing to call her, because she doesn’t have a name lol. In other words, it’s basically more of a nickname or a title.

Obviously, because of that they named her. Hence it is her “name.”

Before this you said it is not a “name”. And now you said it is a “name” /nickname/title.

            > Nicknames and titles have meanings, and that’s why they are generally translated.

At first you translate Mumei to No-Name, then said Mumei is not a name, then said it doesn’t mean No Name/Nameless and now you said because it is a name and have meanings that is the reason why it got translated to No-Name. WHATTTTT???

If you really think so then you should translate ALL the characters name as well because I’m so sure all of them must have some kind of meaning in some way. Like Ayame as Siberian Iris.

            > what do you suppose we would’ve done then? Going from Mumei > Something Else wouldn’t have made sense to an English audience.

You missing the whole point, nobody complain about Mumei. People complain because you translating Mumei to No-Name. Why not just leave it as Mumei? English is my third language and Japanese is my forth I still understand that it is a name. I’m sure anyone on earth who watch this anime would understand that it is a name of the character, of course except stupid ones.

Your logic and back pedal are the worst. Besides, at this point with all the localization now It got turned into a troll subs. Do what you want, I’m done.

          • “> it doesn’t literally mean “No Name/Nameless”.

            ???????

            http://jisho.org/search/無名

            Then what does it mean?
Why translating “Mumei” to “No-Name” then?”

He’s saying YOUR fucking name Statix doesn’t mean “no-name” and therefore doesn’t need to be translated, unlike “Mumei”.

Oh for fuck’s sake, I normally hate to be rude, but your English is fucking horrendous and if THAT’S your 3rd language, then your “forth” (it’s “fourth” by the way) language Japanese is probably even fucking worse, so why are you arguing? Your post clearly shows that you have no idea what Period is even saying, so perhaps you should just save yourself the embarrassment and stop making a fool of yourself.

            Jesus Christ.

          • QQwerty snapped. He swear jar recoices!

          • Fucking retarded, learn to proofread. It’s rejoice.

          • Period

I was saying your argument about other names, and specifically your argument that by going by my logic even your name Statix is not a name, was invalid because other “names” don’t literally mean No-name. That played a part in our decision, regardless of the argument if it’s actually a name or not. If you couldn’t make sense of that, maybe you need to check your English first because I quoted you and made it pretty clear what I was replying to and you just made a long rant calling me out for backpedaling.

I said yes, Mumei is used as a name, but it is not one. It is much closer to a title or nickname because guess what? After she lost her humanity, she lost her name. Her brother called her Mumei simply because he didn’t know what else to call her. Mumei means Nameless. It’s not her real name.

Fuck no we’re not translating every character’s name, because they are actual names. Translating names is stupid for most shows, unless there’s a good reason for it like CR is doing with Ace Attorney.

Mumei is not a name, it’s more like a title. She has no name. She’s Nameless.

Guess what we do with other titles, such as honorifics? We translate them, because they can be translated for English audiences. I’m sorry that Japanese is your tenth language or whatever so you don’t need things translated. Press s and enjoy the show raw.

          • Statix

            @QQwerty

            > He’s saying YOUR fucking name Statix doesn’t mean “no-name” and therefore doesn’t need to be translated, unlike “Mumei”.

Did you even read where it all start, what happened after that, what I quoted and my questions? Hell, obviously not.

            > I normally hate to be rude

Then don’t be an apologist. It’s stupid. :)

            > but your English is fucking horrendous and if THAT’S your 3rd language, then your “forth” (it’s “fourth” by the way) language Japanese is probably even fucking worse, so why are you arguing?

Lol, starting with ad hominem, very well then. But again missed the whole point, I never said anything about my third or fourth is perfect and of course the world gonna end when I mistyped because nobody on earth done that before. I’m so sure you never mistyped either, right? Hypocrite. ;)

Your English is so good, probably first language for sure. I’m sure your third and fourth language must be so good since you can’t even read and analyze the event properly. Well, If you are even learning on your second language, that is. Not to mention how you are can’t read, nit-picking, appeal to authority, tu quoque, ad hominem and missed the whole point. Wow, are you a grade schooler? I’m gonna be so surprised if you’re older than that.

            > Your post clearly shows that you have no idea what Period is even saying, so perhaps you should just save yourself the embarrassment and stop making a fool of yourself.

For the starter. You should telling that to yourself first. Just by reading that and I feeling embarrassed for you.

            > Jesus Christ.

Jesus, the air bender? Well, the magic books are real after all lol. Theist are dumb, just saying.

            #BrokenLogic

            —–

            @Period

            > regardless of the argument if it’s actually a name or not

Actually that the point of this argument. I even given a few examples in the first post. It’s so obvious. I’m not sure why anyone would missed that. Strawman? ;)

            > maybe you need to check your English first because I quoted you and made it pretty clear what I was replying to and you just made a long rant calling me out for backpedaling.

Strawman, again? I’m sure I quoted exactly what you said. Maybe you need to go back and read what you said first and while doing that “check your English” too.

            > I said yes, Mumei is used as a name

Nope. This is what you said “Because Mumei isn’t a name.”
Sorry but I’m not that stupid to can’t remember what you said.
And If you want to be a liar you must have a good memory.
Or else you gonna have a problem if you can’t remember what you said.

            > but it is not one.

Why? Who gave the right to decide which word can and cannot be a name? You?

            > It is much closer to a title or nickname

If it’s a word for calling someone. Then it’s the same. It’s a name. How is it not a name?

“A name is a term used for identification. Names can identify a class or category of things, or a single thing, either uniquely, or within a given context. A personal name identifies, not necessarily uniquely, a specific individual human. The name of a specific entity is sometimes called a proper name (although that term has a philosophical meaning also) and is, when consisting of only one word, a proper noun. Other nouns are sometimes called “common names” or (obsolete) “general names”. A name can be given to a person, place, or thing; for example, parents can give their child a name or a scientist can give an element a name.” -wikipedia

            > After she lost her humanity, she lost her name. Her brother called her Mumei simply because he didn’t know what else to call her. Mumei means Nameless. It’s not her real name.

Translation: Her brother named her “Mumei.” /thread
Man, English is so hard to understand. I’m sure only native English speaker can understand all that. ;)

            > Fuck no we’re not translating every character’s name, because they are actual names. Translating names is stupid for most shows, unless there’s a good reason for it like CR is doing with Ace Attorney.

But somehow DDY translating “Mumei” to “No-Name.”
            How is this not stupid?
Because you are the one doing it?
Is this is what we called hypocrite?
Or because it is not a name? Again?

            > Mumei is not a name, it’s more like a title. She has no name. She’s Nameless.

            I FUCKING KNEW IT!!! LMAO!1!!1!!

            #BrokenLogic

          • koinuri

I really don’t understand why translating Mumei to “No-Name” is such a big deal but translating some other names, like Koutetsujou to “Ironclad Fortress”, isn’t. Being called No Name actually has potential of being important in story considering how much the animation staff pushes the “mysterious Mumei” on like every interview that involves her, while Koutetsujou is just a name of the train they’re riding and the meaning is most likely irrelevant to the story like any other names in the show. By not knowing that Mumei means “Nameless”, the English audience might miss a chunk of the story. And I’m pretty sure people translate Koutetsujou only because it’s too long for English speakers or something, which, if you’re so stubborn about keeping Mumei as is, I don’t think is a very valid reasoning. A bit inconsistent with your ideology if you ask me.

And this whole “Every Japanese name has a meaning” thing is another thing that bothers me. They’re more like an “origin” rather than “definition”. Creators chose certain kanjis to match the characters for their name, but they do it only because they have to in order to create a Japanese name. They are not supposed to be directly translated, just like you wouldn’t translate the name Robert to “bright fame” (according to this behind the name website). And you can never use “robert” as a synonym for “bright fame”, because it’s not a word and “robert” doesn’t mean (define) “bright fame”.

Mumei, on the other hand, do have a definition. It’s a Japanese word. They used the word “no name/nameless/anonymous” you can find on many Japanese dictionaries for her name. You even linked one yourself. Guess what happens when you try to look up Ikoma there?

            http://jisho.org/search/%E7%94%9F%E9%A7%92

A list of names and zero entries explaining its definition!

Mumei’s name is not a random string of kanjis that might mean “no name” like all the other characters. It’s literally a word. Comparing her name with any other names here is nonsense.

“Why didn’t you translate all the other names?” is a stupid argument. It’s simple. They’re not translatable. But Mumei is. And the meaning of Mumei is important. So we translated it.

          • This is the last time I will post here.

Statix, you do not understand the arguments being presented. Stop and go watch Horriblesubs.

          • Period

Honestly I can’t follow your logic anymore. I’m responding to your argument of why it’s a name with reasons why it’s not. It’s not a name so we TL’d it, because she’s nameless. That’s the reality of things. We’re not changing it back to Mumei so enjoy HS or Doki.

    • This whole debate reminds me of the movie Hero. Jet Li’s character was also called “Nameless” and it wouldn’t have even cross my mind to keep the Chinese name instead because NOBODY would have understood it. Same goes for all the other characters. Why not push the reasoning to its extreme, then, and leave the names like Kureha as is instead of making actual sense and writing Claire?

  • Kamiyanstinx

    >One word, where the hell have you been, Yeah may be one word here but look through all these comments and not just this ep.

Yep, they should have left the whole script in Japanese. These punks have zero respect towards the best national culture of all the ever times ever.

Is there any point translating this or any anime when a lot of your “fans” don’t appear to be able to comprehend English.

you’re wasting your time they not gonna answer to your questions. they gonna keeps avoiding all the questions just like before. why? you might ask. because they already ruined the good name of ddy and if they answer your questions they gonna losing their face too. not gonna happen.

    • Period

Oh no my fansubbing career is over because a few people on a blog who don’t know English or Japanese are attacking me with stupid arguments !!!

    • Kamiyanstinx

      >they gonna keeps

      Wot.

    • Statix

I know. The strongest signal is when they start using ad hominem. It’s quite simple pattern that I always encounter in arguments. If everything got debunked, they got their back against the wall, they will avoid all the questions, running in a circle with their words and ad hominem. The fastest way is pretending that you not good at something like mistyped a lot, if they bite that, then they’re very low level, like in this thread. I keep going because it’s fun to see people in denial lol. Normally I play in political and religion part of internet though. More fun, higher level and more people. This one bite the bait and start using ad hominem in just a few posts, so dumb lol.

      • Kamiyanstinx

        Sup, Kristen?

      • Seraphel

Say ‘ad hominem’ one more time so we know you-is-smart-debater~

The fact is you either misunderstood or pretended to misunderstand their replies then went all crazy over-analytical and out-of-context on it all while continuing to be sarcastic about their attempts to make you understand. That you claim to ‘play’ at arguments elsewhere just makes you seem like a persistent troll who had no intention of seeing their side of things in the first place.

PS: See WZ1’s post. They responded much the same, I noticed, after I typed.

  • Asinine

I don’t see why people are butt hurt over translating mumei to no-name, maybe DDY could of used a TL note but no one seems to use those anymore.

  • Fallanx

So wait you are having some kind of war over a couple of words that 2(random number I picked because I am not reading all the posts, they are long) people are upset about?

    only logical reply:

stop bothering them, they have real lives outside of subbing

  • WZ1

    >If everything got debunked, they got their back against the wall, they will avoid all the questions, running in a circle with their words and ad hominem.
Except for the part where no one was backed up against a wall, no questions were avoided, and the “circle” they were running around in was literally the only issue at hand: the use of “No-name” as Mumei’s “name”

The entire point of the translation of “Mumei” to “No-name” is as follows: Unless you run a Google search or just *happen* to know enough Japanese to recognize that “Mumei” means “nameless”, you will never understand the whole story behind her name.
Also, someone else mentioned that we could have used TL notes. I’ll agree: TL notes are nice. However, part of the reason they were abandoned is shit like this:
    http://i.imgur.com/1MDtAHn.png
    http://i.imgur.com/Bhecf.jpg
TL notes have a bad reputation, and a choice was made. That is all.

P.S: If you normally “play in political and religion part of internet”, then kindly do us all a favor and return to the dark corner of the internet from whence you came, sparing us from both your abominable grammar and your argument composition skills. (Yeah, I get it. Ad hominem. I don’t care.)

P.P.S: If you can’t find better things to do with your life than insult people for the stylistic choices they made in a *free* translation, then go fucking translate your own cartoons, you ungrateful swine.
