Shingeki no Kyojin (The Final Season) Part 1

Never change, Lobby.

So, here’s the thing. These BDs kinda sucked. Or at least didn’t meet expectations. Typical anime BDs are ~7GB/episode… The first part of the Final Season got 4-5GB/episode. This was despite each disc having >20GB free on each one. So despite being a super action heavy show and a quite detailed season, they dropped the bitrate. To preserve more of what was there, I bloated it a bit until I was happy with it.

Additionally, I decided that we’re going to try out x265 for these BDs as well as our normal x264. My goal was to essentially mirror the quality of the x264 as closely as possible for this project. That said, in basically every comparison I did, x265 was slightly better. In particular in motion, where x264 blocks, x265 blurs, which was much preferable to me. But also in detail retention and lines in dark scenes. Overall, this is still my first foray into x265. I’m pretty happy with it, but I hope you won’t judge it too harshly if I fucked it up somehow.

Due to the size of this release, we will not be supporting a DDL option.

Once again, a big thanks to the staff for all their work this season:

  • TL: DubstepKazoo
  • TLC: skookie44
  • Edit: UndefinedSnail
  • Timing: Hybrid21
  • QC: Nazaki
  • Kfx: tsuku
  • Encode: begna112
  • TS: begna112

We’re hiring skilled fansubbers. Must be able to balance in 3D Maneuver Gear. If this sounds like you, head over to our recruitment page to get started.

“In particular in motion, where x264 blocks, x265 blurs, which was much preferable to me.”

As it states here, the x265 (HEVC) release is the preferable version. Additionally, within the Nyaa comment section of the x265 version it was said: “I did observe better detail retention, especially in dark and action scenes, at similar bitrates. So instead of “smaller and worse, but better than x264”, it’s “similarly sized and better than x264” here.”

      So there you have it.
Keep in mind though– This is, of course, fairly subjective and ultimately comes down to personal preference.

Missing title card TS sign for ep 6 at 06:45.

Endings for episodes are missing some preview sign TS too, but not as important. On the chapter marker for every episode.
