Party hearty, Maria fans.
Episode 08 is on schedule to be released this week. Hopefully next week we’ll be on time. This show requires a ridiculous amount of TLC and it’s wearing our TLC thin, especially since he’s doing two shows. Please be patient with us.
Like Maria, we’re still looking for that special someone. We’re in need of Translators and Translation checkers, Editors and Quality Checkers, Typesetters and KFXers. If any of these positions appeal to you, head over to our recruitment page to get started.
Once again the producers have been kind enough to provide some historical notes on the show’s homepage (Google translated).
Sign of the horns (Release pic): In many Mediterranean and Latin countries, when directed towards someone and swiveled back and forth, the sign implies cuckoldry.
Barber surgeon: The barber surgeon was one of the most common medical practitioners of medieval Europe – generally charged with looking after soldiers during or after a battle. In this era, surgery was not generally conducted by physicians, but by barbers (who of course had a sharp-bladed razor as an indispensable tool of their profession). In the Middle Ages in Europe barbers would be expected to do anything from cutting hair to amputating limbs
The Gauls: the Gauls were Celtic peoples inhabiting Gaul in the Iron Age and the Roman period.
La Velue: a supposed dragon or mythical beast that terrorized La Ferté-Bernard, France, in medieval times. It is said to have come from and lived near the Huisne river near the town. Despite the French origins, its more recognized name is Occitan —or any latine origin— for “hairy”. Depending on the account, it had either an ox-sized porcupine-like body or a mess of green hair-like projections hanging from its body that were actually stinger-tipped tentacles which could erect into quills. Its name is derived from this shaggy appearance. Consistently, it was said to have these poisonous stingers that it could also shoot off its body, a snake’s scaly neck, head, and tail, large, tortoise-like feet, and a green color.
Moor: For the Muslims that invaded Europe during the Middle Ages. Also used as derogatory against those of ancestry where the Moors settled (Spain, Sicily) – they are “part Moor”.
Failed Japanese biblical reference: This verse is referenced in the episode as David’s attempt at ruling justly… That’s not what the verse is about. Feel free to read it yourself. Essentially, either Satan or God (there is controversy over which, based on translation) convinced David to enlist the men of his country and then count his troops. This apparently made God angry. No clue how or why the studio thinks this would be related.
And there was much rejoicing!
My thanks for the release. Best anime I’ve seen in a very long time, thank you so much for working on it♥
Sweet… thanks for the ep!
Many thanks for the new release!
Been waiting for this. Surprisingly, best subs for this series. You guys manage to fix most of CR’s worst mistakes, but it still bothers me that you use “guild” for the witches instead of “coven”.
Wow. I didn’t even know that term existed. We may swap to that for batch. Thanks for the tip.
CR? I wish. This is funimation we’re dealing with.
The word coven has only retroactively applied to a gathering of witches in the past 94 years, especially in the past 20 odd years.
Coven was first used to describe a group of witches in 1921 (see also), and only became a relatively known term because the book it was mentioned in became popular over time.
Prior to coven becoming mainstream by the influence of western media this millennia, a group of witches were oft called a cackle for a brief period in history, also due to a popular book.
For the time period Maria is set in, neither coven nor cackle was a word you would even consider using to describe an organized gathering of witches. Even though coven is an old word itself.
Whether or not that is a good or bad argument for using guild rather than coven we’ll look into when it comes time to batch the series. To be honest with you, I’d considered coven when the term guild first appeared in the FUNi script, hence the research, but decided against it at the time. I’d reasoned that coven was a historically inaccurate term, while guild was a more familiar word.
Anyone else reading this is welcome to express their preference for guild, coven or something else entirely (no, not cackle, please).
How about “cabal” You can check it out here : http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/cabal
>Origin of CABAL
French cabale cabala, intrigue, cabal, from Medieval Latin cabbala cabala, from Late Hebrew qabbālāh, literally, received (lore)
First Known Use: 1614
I think would work great here. I also must express my gratitude for your work on this series. GF is right this show is awesome!
“Guild” still has a different sort of impression in my mind, but if it’s more historically accurate, then I understand including it. There were several other mistakes in the CR script I noticed including incorrect TL, poor grammar, and referring to the English as “Englanders”. You guys fixed every one of them but “guild”, but if research shows it would have been the term used at the time, I can’t argue with that.
Sankyuu :3
and waiting for ISUCA :)
I seem to have gotten a corrupted file, distorted image 3/4 way through then crashed the media player… :/
your work is normally near faultless, I’ll re-download it to see if the problem was on my end. Looking forward to more Maria and ISUCA.
You can always check to see if it is corrupt using rapidcrc or animechecker.
Thank you !
SPOIL !!!
Martha stay with us !
END SPOIL !!!
Thanks a lot!
Spring plans?
Gintama maybe?
Plans will be revealed in about 3 weeks time.
Gintama seems unlikely as we didn’t do the previous season or the movie. But it’s too early for definite plans.
No one did and Gin-kun is too godlike to watch it from HS.
We will be having a go at it over at WCP (new OVA is 100% likely) and will continue it if no one else does (we obviously won’t drop it if the alternative is shitty).
*shameless advertising over*
Hate to be that guy, but is there any ETA on the next release? I’ve already had to switch to raws on 2 shows this season because of a 5+ episode delay, I’d hate to see this become the third.
Firstly, thanks for being patient with our releases. Trust me when I say that none of the staff working on Maria ever wanted it to get so far behind.
Episodes 08 and 09 are still with our Translation Checker, whom we’ve been relentlessly whipping to keep him grinding away at his job. I can’t give you an ETA, but I can promise you that Maria is being worked on and should come out soon.
