Summer 2016

Hello, eager anime fans. You’ve come here looking for new adventures, new stories and probably 2D girls to fall in love with. (Don’t listen to what anyone says, it’s perfectly normal.) You want to be reassured that DDY will translate your waifu’s secret messages spoken in a secret language to you.

Unfortunately, this season you will need to look elsewhere.

DDY will be taking a break this season from airing anime to do a couple things. First, unstall and hopefully complete all our stalled TV and Bluray shows. And second, do some home-improvement.

What do I mean by that? I mean a whole bunch of things from training our staff on new positions and automating some of our workflow to redesigning our back-end server infrastructure from the ground up.

Why now? Because we honestly weren’t interested in much this season and the shows we had looked at a bit are already being done in other groups. It was just the right time to do it.

We’ve got a lot planned. And even though you might not notice the changes on the surface, we hope that they’ll lead to faster and higher quality releases as well as make our lives easier.

Edit: We ARE still continuing Re:Zero.

I’m glad you’re doing this. It pisses me off to no end when groups have a whole backlog of shows to finish and then they’re like check out all the stuff we’re picking up! Looking at you commie

    • LoliHat

Exactly. Nice to see a group follow through on finishing a series.

    • schwa

What, you don’t like shows being a month behind less than halfway through the season? Are you too good for your weekly installment of whatever 5-15min show they’re doing and nothing else?

  • Good luck! I presume you’ll still continue the second cour of Re:Zero, which is technically part of the summer season, correct? I wouldn’t watch any other group do it. :p

  • I think that’s the best you can do. Smaller groups need to focus on quality and rest. Burn out is real. Plus is its covered half decently its nothing that can not wait till the BDs hit if the group wants to mess with it. Good luck guys and rest well!

Let us know what your up to!

    • I don’t think we qualify as “small group” though :’)

      • Well quality tends to skew smaller operation IMO. Commie(which has started to slow down)/FFF/Horrible seem more prolific , I would not dub im speed subbers there again I can only keep so much in my head and every other year some groups shift focus or slow down. In any case as far as quality goes I prefer DDY over the rest then Chihiro/Doki/FFF. Then again I am wired I want my subs with karaoke and honorifics as much as possible so I will hunt for more preferable subs when I can. Horrible tho damn how do they keep up at least its a better job than CR(dunno if they improved or not it’s been ages since I bothered with crunchy roll) even if they skip karaoke (which I hate) that’s alot of work 0-o

        • Horriblesubs is a direct Crunchyroll / funimation / daisuki / other simulcast rip. it’s completely automated so there’s no work being done. That’s how they keep up. lol

          • They do karaoke now and then I guess that’s what threw me off. So horrible is automatically horrible LOL
Eh No wonder they do stuff no one else will LOL

            • Horriblesubs don’t do karaoke. If the simulcast they are ripping has karaoke, then the HS rip will have it also.
HS are just a simulcast ripping group.

          • Learn something new every few days and it burnssss uusss….. ><

          • They add some light typesetting here and there, actually. I guess it’s not always fully automated?

            • No, they don’t.
If you have examples to the contrary, post ’em.

          • moozooh fucking please

          • @itsP
            1. Kiznaiver: http://www.crymore.net/2016/04/19/officialsubs-review-crunchyroll-kiznaiver-episode-02/ (Visual Review -> Typesetting).
            2. Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu: typeset some of the signs; it was basic as hell but I remember it looking notably better than I would expect from the official subs (can’t point out anything specific since I didn’t archive it).
            3. Monogatari S2: typeset the episode titles, moved the lines that are supposed to be typeset at the upper part of the screen (when the original script left them at the bottom, to my knowledge) and fixed the all-caps lines.

I would’ve likely provided more examples, but I almost never watch HS releases myself (Rakugo was one of the recent exceptions because no better group attempted it at the time), and I certainly don’t archive them. I’m not saying they always do something like this, but the evidence points at some low-effort fixes/enhancements being introduced at least occasionally rather than never, as you guys seem to claim.

            Fucking here you go?..

          • By the gods what did I start =0-o=
It’s like the voices in my head came to life…only being smarter and stuff…

          • Period

Nope, that’s all typesetting done by official subs. When a non-lazy typesetter gets put on a show at CR they occasionally use incompatible tags because when it gets hard subbed for mobile devices it displays correctly because it hardsubs with libass.

Don’t give HS credit for subbing. It’s just an automated bot.

          • @Period
Ok, let’s assume I’m dumb and need to be spoonfed. Explain this couple of images to me, please:
http://i.imgur.com/GiOhJYN.png (Aniplex, streamed from the site)
            http://i.imgur.com/Pg87VeD.png (HS, airdate release)

There are two things immediately jumping out at me in this comparison:
            1) lines are different: some are contracted and others omitted entirely (i.e. this is not a direct rip);
            2) there is extra typesetting (typeface, positioning, effects) not present in the original.

Please explain this to me, because I don’t get it how they managed to make an automated bot that good.

            • There are two possibilities.

              1. One of the HS devs liked the show enough to put a little effort into it consistently. This is unlikely, though.

              2. One of the HS devs liked the show enough to write a script to do it automatically. I know, that seems ridiculous; “how could you write a bot/script to do all that?”

The fact is that it’s really easy compared to some of the other automation available to fansubbers and created by fansubbers. Do you think we manually create multiple tracks when we decide to do localized and unlocalized sxripts? No, there’s a script for that. What about tracking signs or mass edits of typesetting? Again, there’s a script for that. Some groups have irc bots do all the initial work for them like downloading crunchyroll, ripping the script, swapping styles, correcting the color space, swapping out terms, running spell check, etc. When the signs are consistent like the ones in monogatari, it becomes even easier.

Again, that isn’t to say it’s impossible that a HS dev put in some effort to do some basic TSing each episode. Just incredibly unlikely considering their stances on the work fansubbers do.

          • Period

[herkz] that was before they figured out how to rip daisuki’s video

(i guess it was the first daisuki rip HS did, after all)
(come to think of it, they had trouble with koutetsujou ep1 too cuz of amazon’s encryption)
so I guess I was kinda wrong, but basically they avoid non-automation at all costs

          • PaleBlue

Occasionally, HS will just rip off another fansub group if they can’t get anything else. I’m pretty sure they’re ripping off gg’s version of Kuromukuro this season, for example.

          • Period

Uh, you do realize the guy who runs HS is also the guy who runs gg, right? :v

          • Marson

That’s not completely true. Otherwise how do you explain HS putting out subs for shows that have neither official subs nor fansubs from other groups?

          • Period

Kurumukuro is the only show they’ve done that for, and they’re using gg’s subs for it because the person who runs gg also runs HS.

If you can point me to this magical show that had no fansubs or officalsubs but got released on HS i’ll shut up, but that doesn’t exist.

        • HorribleSubs only subbed a single episode in its whole history to my knowledge. First ep of AKB0048. Subs sucked.

@moozooh that’s because the typesetting was already present in source material (90% sure it’s only CR – or at least it used to be only CR, I don’t follow as many shows now).

          • Monogatari S2 was Aniplex/Daisuki, and last I checked these never typeset anything on their own. Thus HS added *some* TS that wasn’t originally there (even if it’s technically one static frame per episode).

    • Hiroin

      >hurrr durr this is my blog
Holyshit, how new are you, weebs?

  • ATM

are you gonna continue Re:Zero ????

  • Humberto H

I saw this coming. Good luck guys!

  • Dylan21

I’m glad you’re doing this. Rather catch up and finish all your BD releases plus also stalled TV series, so in Fall 2016 won’t have to worry about those.

  • >no new shows

    Fucking dropped.

  • Kamiyanstinx

Summer season looks horrible, and CR already has everything worth watching. Furthermore, these shows don’t air on TX, so video quality should be good. So, yeah, you should just unstall some shows.
And I’m still waiting for Anime de Wakaru Shinryounaika.

  • Mega

    Good stuff.

  • I guess that’s a good thing ^^

NGNL, Working, Noragami, Utawarerumono and hopefully Re:Zero BDs would be a treat worth looking forward to this season. So yeah, are you guys picking up Re:Zero BDs ‘cuz I don’t see it in your widged??

    • Period

Utawarerumono and Koutetsujou BDs very soon, promise babe.

And yes we are. I know this cuz begna asked me to QC them.

  • SomeDudeOnTheNet

So long as you’re continuing Re:Zero, I’m good.

  • MantasB

    Large, high contrast subs incoming.

  • Azraei

    You make right decision

  • ranmachua

I can see why there was no poll asking which series DDY would like to sub in the upcoming season

  • Chaos Dragon?

  • Cloud*

Couldn’t be happier! Looking forward to more BD goodness :3

  • Keaton

Taking a break this season and catching up on delays and blu-rays is totally fine by me, welcome even. The fall season however, Okusama ga Seitokaichou! is back for season two and that is a necessity. If anyone finds a respectable group who plans on doing Food Wars season two this season though, let me know. It’s the only one I have an interest in.

    • Period

I assume by respectable you’re implying “not FFF”, but they didn’t stall season one too badly so I wouldn’t worry.

Yes, we’ll be doing Okusama. Consider that confirmed already.

    • RUDE

  • Anon

are you going to do Kabaneri BDs?

  • Toi

    >??????? @ 1-4 Finished, 5+ @ TL
What the fuq is dat? Is it going to be released after whole series is comleted??

  • Yukarin

I was just wondering if you guys have plan to do Classroom Crisis BDs?

  • Good call, summer looks like complete ass. Wonder who’s gonna do Prisma Illya, though.

    • Period

&/Impatience were looking at it I think. Dunno if I can recommend them over CR though, the last time I watched something by them they had a lot of issues that still needed addressed.

I was considering doing the BDs (because lets face it, doing TV for the show is a waste of time).

      • Yeah I’ll end up waiting for the BDs anyway. Most of the other seasons were done by BD groups so I hadn’t considered that possibility. Guess I’ll wait it out awhile and keep my fingers crossed.

I haven’t actually watched anything from &/Impatience but I suppose I’ll take your word for it. I saw they did a joint with Bit, and their (Bit’s) Anne Happy version was a trainwreck thru & thru

  • etherlite

A suggestion: since you also did the Flying Witch Petit, why don’t you do the Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Break Time?

It’s a less than 3 minutes web based show that I found to be quite funny and could be worth your time doing. :)

  • Raikiri29

    Someone will sub Fate/Kaleid s3 ?

  • Loksfox

For a second i thought we wouldn’t be getting more Re Zero, i’m glad i was wrong :)

  • Kamiyanstinx

    Kizumonogatari? Commie dropped it.

      • Kamiyanstinx

        no kizu from me
        no koyomi either

They don’t have TL, so Monogatari is most likely dropped (#confirmed by herkz).

        • Kamiyanstinx

          IRC tags don’t work here…

          (fnord) no kizu from me
          (fnord) no koyomi either

          • Good thing this shit comes after herkz said he’ll do the BDs for Koyomi. Great bait.

    • Period

  • Lynsaw

    it is a pity…
I was hoping the DDY get Handa-kun…
