On the “Drop TT” initiative.

As some of you may know, DameDesuYo has signed Daiz’s Drop TokyoTosho manifesto. I would like to clarify our position as it was not included in the document.

DameDesuYo will NOT stop uploading to TT.

I repeat: DameDesuYo will not stop uploading to TT.

However, I feel strongly enough about TT being a shitty content distribution platform that I was willing to put our name on it. In the months since this document first started circulating, TT was made aware almost immediately and, yet, nothing has changed. For a site that relies almost entirely on fansub groups, you’d think they would care about our input.

And, regardless of the technical aspects that make TT a pain to use, the fact remains that traffic from TT is exponentially outweighed by traffic from Nyaa. So there are two options here, I guess. First, no one actually uses TT and all the ruckus is being whipped up by just a few anons or long standing “enemies” of Nyaa. Or, second, the userbase of TT is shockingly non-interactive.

Feel free to voice your opinion in the comments. Who knows, we may someday drop TT for real. But that day is not today.

  • I think it may be helpful to point out I had no idea of TT’s existance before today, when a couple other groups mentioned this. Nyaa all day, every day.

Get a poll going from your user-base to see who uses it. Do some statistics and determine if it’s worth keeping. Honestly, everyone I talk to uses Nyaa, so it may be worth figuring out to save yourselves the trouble.

  • some random /a/non

You mean people still use TT?
Nyaa is good, there is little reasons to use something else imo.

  • Old Fan

Thanks to not drop TT, I like this site and your group.

  • Firemage

I’ve used TT for ages and from a leacher POV don’t get the crusade against it.

    • The issue is that its difficult to work with from our end. And it really has no features whatsoever.

It’s like comparing a new smartphone to an old rotary landline phone. It provides us no value over the alternative and we have to redial the number 5 times because we spun it too far.

  • Rabies

I’ve been using TT for ever, only time I’ve ever really used a different tracker was when TT was down, usually something like baka-updates or nyaa. Other then that I usually automatically default to TT.

Only thing i don’t like about Nyaa is you need to make an account so it saves your sorting preferences. TT just saves your sorting preferences via cookies.

    • On the flip side, to use a TT account to submit torrents as a trusted submitter, you have to login every time. It doesnt even maintain your session for very long.

  • Zik

didn’t NyaaTorrent have a bad tendy to ban a person/group from using their tracker?

I for one know that Doki has been banned. Not sure the reason why nor what for, but if NyaaTorrent does, then what the point?

    • Doki is a special case because they tried to take down nyaa’s servers via DDoS attacks or something years ago. As of right now, they’re the only group I know of to be banned.

      • rude

According to Doki’s website somewhere in the comments of one of their releases, Holo their leader mentions one of their staff member was involved with that. Either a nyaa staff or Diaz told Holo to stop that person from attacking their site Holo did. However it did not stop there. Nyaa staff or Diaz wanted the guy fired from Doki’s staff but Holo did not comply so they got banned.

If this is accurate as I remember reading and the other side has something similar then it’s not a special case but a held grudge that still holds.

  • heyitisp

While Nyaa might be more popular, there are zero disadvantages to having a secondary indexing site. What happens if one day Nyaa turns tyrannical (starts enforcing logins, using ratio’s, etc)? Competition is necessary to keep the players honest. The worst thing that could happen is we hand one site a monopoly.

    • WZ1

Nyaa is strongly anti-ratio tracking and I highly doubt that logins will be enforced. Also, there are zero advantages to having a shitty secondary indexing site. Nyaa’s fine. Embrace our lord saviors at Nyaa

  • LOOL I didn’t even know this existed until I read this post xD

  • SomeDudeOnTheNet

Well, there is a downside. It’s a pain in the rear for the people who provide our fansub content to use. That seems kind of significant to me.

Between baka-updates and nyaa, I manage to keep up with whatever I choose to follow. It’d be nice if there was “one place” where I could follow *everything, but that’s asking a lot of people who do stuff for free.

(* that I actually have even the slightest interest in caring about)

  • Usome

    Fuck TT, nobody use it.

  • Oyasumi

Just another example of how these fansubbing groups are sheep that belong to Diaz.

Come on, people. Diaz is just an over-the-hill megalomaniac who pushes his wants on the entire fansubbing community to drive it further into the ground.

Not sure what this guy has on everybody that they do whatever he wants. Grow up already. Get a brain and learn to think for yourself. Tell Diaz to go away. The sooner Diaz is ostracized from fansubbing, the better.

    • 1. Did you even read the post? I very clearly stated that we are not dropping TT as he wanted.
      2. My decision to support the initiative had nothing to do with Daiz, and everything to do with hating to release on Tosho. If nothing else, perhaps Daiz just says what the majority of fansubbers are thinking anyway.

    • Sereft

Hilariously enough, the ones giving ‘power’ to Daiz are people like you that insist all fansubbing groups answer to his beck and call. Perhaps you should properly gather your thoughts before posting next time?
Hint: actually reading the post would be a good start.

      • I know right? Those guys are signing Daiz’ initiatives TOTALLY aren’t playing into his bullshit. It’s those guys who call Daiz out for being an ass that are giving him power! I SWER!!1

        • Go bitch at Tokyo Tosho for being shit for the fansub groups instead of being mad at them. Too bad TT has been completely unwilling to work with us.

  • mashingan

I don’t know about technical stuff issues for TT.

Usually I use TT so I can filter the page to display only Translated Anime and Raw Anime. I don’t know if Nyaa have this setting.

If the release using minglong, does it show up in Nyaa?
I just realised that you’re using minglong too :) .

  • Nobody

Just because you like the way Nyaa is run today doesn’t mean you’ll still feel the same way a few months/years down the road.

    • True. And if we need to, we can move then. But then why should we stick with a service we dont like right now?

    • And its not really about how it’s run, per se, and more about functionality. Regardless, we won’t be dropping TT at this time.

  • Fan

Don’t stop using TT, not everyone who follows your releases uses Nyaa.

  • I will leave my two cents here. First off, we explicitly stated that we will continue offering our content on TT. As of right now, we have no plan on changing that. That said, we would also like TT to work on themselves and provide a nicer, more usable site. Still, I personally have some qualms with the way Nyaa is run, in particular the way A+ status is award. To be honest, I think the site would do fine with out Nyaa moderators awarding a tag of excellence to whatever group their friends are in. Nyaa has had a poor record with this in the past, but they are clearly working on making their operations less biased, which is commendable. That said, I agree with ItsP that there is no disadvantage to leechers to having a secondary indexing site, as long as it becomes easier to use for the people who provide the content. But I do not want Nyaa to become the go-to place for all these things, so even if we drop TT (sometime), I will personally ensure our content is uploaded there as well.

  • .

    >stop using the tracker where I’m not a moderator
    Yep that’s daiz alright

  • yamada

TT’s colors are easier to scan. Thats about it. Nyaa are atrocious. Guess ill have to make a style sheet for it, yamada sigh mode.

  • i use both… i don’t understand the hate

  • anon

    >the fact remains that traffic from TT is exponentially outweighed by traffic from Nyaa
Too bad for you suckers and daiz that didn’t really think this through huh? TT having more traffic is total no brainer, just because most fansub groups nowadays are totally daiz’s bitches and uses nyaa as tracker does not mean everyone of your target audience that relies on torrent ever visits nyaa directly.

The obvious action daiz should take next to further his ambitions of dictatorship is to scheme for the shutdown of TT itself.

    • Let me explain this properly. Very little of this actually has to do with Daiz and how we “worship” him. As a matter of fact, our staff has very mixed feelings on Daiz as a member of the fansubbing community. Also, we are not dropping TT, but instead are continuing to put up our content there despite how much of a pain it is to do so (Don’t say we don’t love you.) It is quite simple. TT depends on anime/manga material, which fansubbers provide a large portion of, to get traffic. In turn, we expect TT to provide a interface and a submission process that isn’t a pain in the ass to work with. It is as simple as that. Still, currently, we will work through the pain and do our best to work with TT. But realize that fansubbers don’t bow down to Daiz like you seem to think we do.

  • mhu

Time to write a script to upload every trusted torrent from nyaa to TT.

  • rude

So it wasn’t just me that thought TT for a couple of months was a piece of shit to upload to. I thought I was messing up something on my end with “submit new torrent” then ____ nothing happens. Doesn’t get uploaded. Even with the API still don’t work.

If that’s the same thing happening to you guys? I like to know because I should not nor want to go to IRC (since I’m an idiot on how to use IRC) just to get see what gives. I shouldn’t of have to do that in the first place. It should be easy to upload cuz I stopped uploading anything there as it use to be simple as nyaa is. That’s not the case anymore.

I won’t comment more on that manifesto other then it being silly and sounding agenda ridden by the hypocrisy I’ve seen by the actions of their mods. Monopolization is a bad thing. VERY BAD! Doesn’t nyaa also block AniRena’s tracker? If this was really honest a number of things would not be but it is, so it’s suspicious. Power in the wrong hands corrupt. And a mod or two over there are corrupt especially when protecting their own/buddies releases. Careful when criticizing the subs or common sense statement! You may get that comment deleted (like several of mine have been) or a threat of a ban!

Those other groups hopefully aren’t doing it for the chance at being branded the “blue color” and winning favoritism points (even if the subs are pathetic like the majority of times have been thus far) and not for legitimate reasons like uploading to TT being a pain.

Maybe a temporary ban from them 2-3 seasons would provoke those involved with TT to actually improve their stuff once traffic becomes less and less. If their numbers don’t decrease by active users both not logged in and logged in why would they budge to fix anything?

  • I prefer Tokyo Toshokan over Nyaa for one reason – with TT I’m able to differentiate from when I last visited (either by a line or by a new releases being bolded). This makes it easy to see where I left off from when I last visited the site.

If Nyaa had that ability, I might consider switching over, but until it does I’ll stick with TT for as long as possible.

    • Mere curiosity here, do u visit often enough for that ti be useful? Between my visits, there would be hundreds of new submissions

      • Very useful. I probably visit about a dozen times a day or so. It’s my favorite feature on TT, and one I’ve sorely missed when I’ve had to use Nyaa as my daily driver.

Another feature I use all the time on TT is the quick access to the fansubber’s site (when the link is provided). I usually use that to go to their site and then grab the release off the link there as opposed to using the link directly on Tokyo Toshokan’s site. This allows me to read any of the comments and such made by the group, as well as usually providing me with the latest release (sometimes TT doesn’t have the latest version).

So while Nyaa arguably has more content, I find the UI of TT’s site to have features that I really much prefer overall. For me, Nyaa will do in a pinch, but it’s Tokyo Toshokan all the way if given the choice.

  • anon

Thanks you for not dropping TT. You guys are great.

  • Valkrieys

I use TT as my main site only because of the simplistic layout (Real easy on the eyes) and the website link like GEESE1 said. I like jumping over to check out the group sites once in awhile. The line marking is especially nice if you check once or twice daily for new updates.

NT just feels overly cluttered for my needs, in the end whenever I visit either site, its just to hit the link to start up my torrent (whatever I might be searching for) and much less else.
